Oban is to host a 9 day Winter Festival from 19th to 27th November 2011.

Full details have, of course, yet to be finalised but the programme already look like 9 days of Christmas in advance of the event.

The festival is to start on Saturday 19th November with an Animal Aid Fair. There will be Carriage Rides, Afternoon Tea in Dunollie House, a Reindeer Parade, a Victorian Market, Santa’s Postbox, and Comedy Club night.(Can the public nominate performers, even though some may not see themselves as comedians?)

Atlantis Leisure will have an ice rink opening on Saturday 19th – and there will be a lot of other exciting events running through to the last gasp on the evening of  Sunday 27th.

Even the name – Winter Festival – is immediately attractive.

Perhaps the CalMac late afternoon and evening ferries would sail in festive lighting for the nine nights? Imagine how glorious Oban Bay would look and what an immediate scream of ‘festival ‘  would come from that image?

What about huge massed choirs giving it the welly, inside McCaig’s Tower:  a one hour special for one night only – nothing pretentious,  nothing prissy – all the big Scots rousing numbers belted out for mass public entertainment?

And with Pipe Bands like Pied Pipers leading a series of individual processions from the town centre, by different routes up to the Tower for the event?

Lightsticks all round?

Oban FM broadcasting that event live from the Tower?

This could be such a blast.

Whatever it includes, congratulations Oban – great idea. Winter Festival. Cannot wait.
